"..on the reformer its just you..."

"So you've heard Pilates is good for you"

But why Pilates? There are heaps of options out there promoting all different types of movement so why should you chose Pilates? Well, we’re strong believers that you should always pick something you enjoy doing but we reckon you’ll be as obsessed with Pilates as much as we are within less than 5 classes (we have our 5 class intro offer for $50 so you can give us a whirl). Some of the most popular benefits of Pilates include increased strength, flexibility and mobility – it’s long been documented that Pilates is one of the overall exercises for back pain (Eliks et al, 2019; Rubén Fernández-Rodríguez et al, 2022 and Sonmezer et al, 2021). Other studies have also shown a strong relationship between moderate movement (eg Pilates) and better overall mental health and sleeping patterns (Elbe et al, 2018 and Wang & Boros, 2019).

On the reformer, it’s just you – yes, we run our sessions as group classes but being on a reformer, you’re in complete control of your work out and we encourage you to swap out, add on, take off springs to suit your needs in that moment. Had a sh*itty day and need to offload some of that ‘energy’? Maybe you add another spring for those scooters…kids/dog/partner kept you awake all night and it’s a miracle you even crawled your way into class this morning? Maybe you take a lighter spring option for feet in straps because that second coffee still hasn’t kicked in and you’re wondering if you should’ve stayed in bed (but you know you ALWAYS feel better after class).

There is something about Pilates we find that allows you to turn inwards and really connect with your inner self – “How does it feel when I do this?” or “What if I try this instead?” or “The instructor wants me to do what? She’s off her tree…oh ok, that’s not so bad/ok, I know that feels now…maybe not…” These conversations you have with yourself (and there will be many!) are how you start to find out what your body and mind needs, wants and can do (especially when you think you can’t). We think you will be pleasantly surprised with what you discover about yourself. Pilates is also a great compliment to other types of movement. Whether you’re a runner, cyclist, someone that loves to throw around a bit of tin or just looking to change up your routine, Pilates is something that we can almost* guarantee you’ll reap benefits from (*only because we’re not actual scientists but we see and hear it every day from our clients how much Pilates has helped them run better, lift heavier and cycle further all with less aches and pains).

Our classes vary and feedback from our clients has proven this to be one of the things they love most about TRS. Each of our trainers are fully qualified Pilates instructors with a myriad of different training backgrounds and these themes and experiences inevitably become interwoven in the class plans and the way our trainers teach. Maybe you’ll enjoy all of the different training styles (stop it, you’re too kind) or maybe you’ll only identify with one or two trainers and the way the teach (and that is awesome, too).

Personally, we are most proud of our community – people like you. We get excited when we see your name in our class and every time you walk into class you know you are going to get to do cool stuff with other kickass humans. Exercise can be intimidating if you’re new to it or coming back after a break. Walking into a reformer studio for the first time and seeing something that looks like a kinky torture device can be intimidating, too. Don’t worry – our amazing instructors and incredible clients will support you. It’s not a race, you do you and once you start to get your head around it, we know you’ll become just as much of a Pilates nerd as we are.
